If you've ever thought, "Hey, I’ve got my own logs. I’ve got a mill. Can I just mill my own posts or beams and use them in my building?"
The answer is: Yes, you can. But... there’s one big caveat you’ve got to know first.
See, unless you’re in an area where building permits aren’t required—your lumber has to be graded. And not by your uncle Joe with a good eye, but by a certified, qualified lumber grader.

Why does this matter?
Because even though you might be building on your own land, and even if your wood looks solid, the engineer will not sign off on it unless it’s been officially graded.
Here’s the good news: You can hire a grader to come out to your property. They'll inspect and grade everything you plan to use. And once that’s done—you’re clear to use your own posts and beams.
(Just a heads-up: trusses are a different animal. Those still need to come from a certified truss supplier.)
So, if you want that self-sufficient, off-grid, "I built this myself" pride without getting slapped down by codes or red tape...

Make sure the wood is graded. It’s the one thing standing between your trees and your dream building. Don’t skip the grading step and hope no one notices. It’s a small investment that can save you thousands in delays, rework, or legal headaches.
Want to mill your own posts or beams and still get the job done right the first time? We can help you make it happen. Our team can walk you through the grading process, handle the structural engineering, and even build your structure using your own lumber—posts, beams, and all (except the trusses).
Give us a call and let’s talk about your project. We’ll help you do it your way, the right way—without the red tape and without the guesswork.
