Why Roof Repair is Top Priority

The other day I went out to assess a roof replacement. Old place—early 1900s. You could feel the history in the bones of the house. Originally it had cedar shake, but somewhere along the way someone added a metal roof. Problem is, they didn’t do it right. Not even close.

It’s been sitting empty for the last ten years, and it’s been leaking—bad. There’s rot. Water damage inside. Foundation’s shifting. The cladding is falling apart. It’s one of those situations where you can tell everything started to go downhill the moment the roof was compromised.
But here’s where it gets interesting…
The guy who owns it now? He’s smart. Like, really smart. He said, “If I don’t fix the roof first, nothing else matters.” And he’s absolutely right.

You can throw money at the foundation, fix the drywall, patch up the siding—but if water’s still pouring in from the top, it’s all just a waste of time and cash. He knew the roof had to come first. That one decision sets the whole house up for recovery.
So we’re going to do exactly that. Rip off the old metal. Tear out the original cedar shakes. Get right down to the bones and build it back up with brand new metal roofing—done properly this time.
If you’ve got an old house, or even a not-so-old building with a leaking roof, don’t ignore it. Roofs are the silent protectors. You fix that first, you give everything else a fighting chance.
